New Bill to Save Money for Pet Owners

-New Bill to Save Money for Pet Owners-

Pet ownership may be getting more affordable.  A new bill is working its way through congress to help pet owners save money on their pets’ prescription medications.

The Fairness to Pet Owners Act

The Fairness to Pet Owners Act could help pet owners find lower medication prices by allowing them to receive a digital or paper copy of veterinary prescriptions without having to pay any fees for an extra copy and without having to go through the hassle of signing a waiver. It also opens up the market for more options with competitive pricing and conveniently allows the consumer to shop online pharmacies or local retailers for lower prices on pet meds.

Florida Congressman Gus Bilirakis, who represents the 12th Congressional District including Pasco County and northern parts of Hillsborough County, co-introduced this legislation in March to help make domestic pet ownership more affordable for Americans. Animal Welfare Groups and pet owners across the nation are applauding this bi-partisan bill, which also has companion bills being introduced in the U.S. Senate.

Florida Households with Pets

As dog and cat enthusiasts serving real estate customers with beloved pets of their own, this open market could help us all save dollars on everything from daily medications for chronic conditions, to heartworm prevention, to monthly flea-and-tick control for our furry friends.

In Florida and throughout the surrounding Greater Tampa Bay area, for example, heartworm medicines with flea-and-tick control are particularly important. Our winters aren’t always cold enough to kill off insect populations, which means we have a year-round battle with bugs. A monthly, prescription-strength plan is important to discuss with your pet’s veterinarian.

As we all know, flea control and essential heartworm medicines are not cheap, averaging over $100 for a six-month supply.  The new legislation, however, could increase market competition to make the cost of pet pills easier to swallow.
