How to Create a Healthy Home for Pets

-How to Create a Healthy Home for Pets-

As your pet-friendly real estate team, we know it is important to create a healthy home for pets. Not only is it vital for your pet’s physical health, but it is also important for your financial health.

Much like household costs, economic inflation has increased the costs of pet care.  Data shows veterinary bills have risen around 10 percent during the past year due to spikes in vet wages, supplies, and lab fees.

To protect your pets and prevent health risks, consider these four tips for creating a more pet-friendly and healthy home:

  1. Pet Healthcare Starts at Home

Veterinary visits to treat injuries or illnesses as well as regular check-ups for screenings and vaccines remain important. Although at home, you will also need to do your part. A prevention program for heartworm, parasites, fleas, and ticks will usually require you to give medication to your cats and dogs at home on a designated schedule.  Use an app calendar or hang reminders on your refrigerator to keep your pet in good health.

  1. Safety is a Priority in Pet-Friendly Homes

Safe spaces are the key to creating pet-friendly homes.  Fencing can ensure your pet stays in a specific outdoor space. Inside, you may want to add gates or slip-resistant mats to prevent risks from slippery floors or steep stairways. Nail trimmings are also important for carpeted areas, where nails can snag and become stuck. Consider designating a pet-grooming station for nail trimmings, brushing, and bathing for your pet’s hair and skincare needs.

  1. Go Green and Natural to Protect Pets

Yes, we have all seen the commercials. We are fully aware of the great benefits of feeding our pets more natural, organic, and less-processed foods. It is also important, however, to choose more natural products for our indoor and outdoor spaces.  Toxin-free landscaping is a key to limiting any risk factors where your pets like to frolic. Fortunately, there are natural alternatives to dangerous chemical fertilizers. Also, go green inside your Tampa Bay home by only choosing pesticides and cleaners that are certified and safe for use around pets.

  1. A Happy Pet is a Healthy Pet

Most simply, happy pets tend to be more physically active. Inspire fun activities with toys and designated play spaces for your pets.  Dogs, of course, love fenced-in yards for running around, while cats may delight in swatting at a string. Adding a screened-in patio or “catio” with climbing tiers could be a great and safe solution for indoor cats wanting to explore the outdoors.
