-10 Tips for Transitions to New Communities-

One of the most exciting parts of moving can be the opportunity for joining a new community in the Greater Tampa Bay area.  Transitions to new communities might be intimidating for some of us, especially if we have spent many years in one place.

For example, perhaps you are an empty nester considering a move out of the neighborhood you have lived in for decades. Transitioning out of your 3-bedroom Carrollwood house into a small condominium in an active-living retirement community could mean a major life change.

Solutions for Settling into a New Neighborhood

Whether you are downsizing, moving between homes, or transitioning to a snowbird lifestyle, here are some simple yet important tips for becoming acquainted with your new community.

  1. First, rely on the expertise of real estate professionals. We are here to help make your transition as seamless as possible. Our team is constantly researching and updating records and statistics to provide useful neighborhood information for our customers.
  2. Take time to compile phone numbers and addresses for the nearby hospitals, pharmacies, gas stations, convenience stores, and municipalities in your new area. This will be good to have on hand, prior to any emergency.
  3. Always make use of “small talk” when meeting new neighbors. Don’t be shy in asking them for tips and advice. Specifically, ask about shortcuts and backroads in the area, the best eateries around town, and the top-rated local service providers.
  4. Attend the Neighborhood Association or Homeowners’ Association. You can learn valuable information by attending meetings or becoming an active board member.  You may also meet people and contribute to the community by volunteering at a non-profit in the area.
  5. Get social with a local group on Facebook or join Nextdoor to connect “virtually” with new neighbors through online networks. You may also consider one of Tampa Bay’s many senior “meet-ups” offering in-person opportunities to meet folks and discover new places.
  6. If you love throwing a good party or hosting events, consider inviting your next-door neighbors to a housewarming, summer cookout, winetasting, or other get-together at your new home for getting to know each other. You may spark a lifelong friendship.
  7. Chat up the wait staff at the local cafe or the clerk at the corner store to find out about things trending in your area. They often have the 4-1-1 on upcoming events, new developments, and up-and-coming businesses in the area.
  8. Check local newspapers, television reports, and neighborhood newsletters to learn about local government issues, construction, developments, and business news in your new area.
  9. Learn about local data, safety, and crime stats. Check out CrimeReports.com for maps and reports of criminal activity in your area, or see City-Data.com for neighborhood profiles.
  10. Finally yet importantly, a simple Google search for your neighborhood name and nearby streets can provide you interesting reports, documents, zoning, schools, data, and much more information about your new community. It is worth a look to stay in the know.
