Florida Home, Smaller Home Trends, Sunrooms, Decor

Floridians live in a vacation paradise, and it makes sense for us to create spaces in our homes that exude a vacation vibe.  A great way to do this is by designing a Florida room or creating a serene, spa-like room to enjoy during your staycations and throughout the year. Florida rooms are also called “sunrooms” and normally have three walls of windows to let in the maximum amount of natural light.  Being surrounded by so much natural light gives the body a feeling of being outdoors while indoors. This is a perfect option for hot Florida summers.

Florida rooms typically take a back seat in home budgets, as money often goes to remodeling the kitchen or bathroom. This is a shame because a spruce up of your Florida room doesn’t have to cost a fortune. We have put together some of the hottest summer trends that will help you turn your Florida room into the oasis you deserve. If you don’t have a Florida room, you can apply these tips to any room in your home that doubles as an escape.

  • Botanicals: To bring an outdoors feeling to the inside, add some plant life. Complicated, mixed planters are a thing of past. Think more simply with singular plants showcased on their own. To play up the spa atmosphere, choose plants like palms, rhododendrons, or rubber plants that filter the air and make your retreat cleaner. Adding plants with aromatic appeal will heighten your feeling of Zen. Try scented geraniums, lavender, or citrus. Potted culinary herbs not only look and smell great, but they can be used in cocktails and meals. Some good choices are basil, rosemary, mint, and oregano.
  • Wet-Bar: Your Florida room will be so relaxing you won’t want to venture into the kitchen to make a drink. Why not have the supplies you need right where you need them? Station your newly potted herbs close to the bar for easy watering. Gold is the metal of choice this summer, and a bar is a perfect place for this shiny addition. A bar cart with gold legs or gold trimmed glassware are just a few ideas to get you started. Even if you are not a drinker, a wet-bar packed with iced tea, fresh juices, and sparkling water can be a refuge on a hot day.
  • Texture over Patterns: To keep with the serenity theme, you will want to stay on trend and minimize the use of complicated patterns. Limit patterns to one or two places in your space. Artwork or throw rugs are great ways to introduce patterns. Think instead about adding different textures to your design. Textile art is one solution as is mixing wood furniture with metal accents. Add comfort with silky soft throw blankets and pillows. Remember your botanicals are also acting as living decorations.
  • Ice Cream Tones: On-trend colors for summer are ice cream tones, which work perfectly for a peaceful getaway space. Don’t get ice cream shades confused with the pastels of the past. These are modern, dustier tones used as accents to add subtle color to a space. Also, consider bringing in a bit of the beach with sandy tones on the wall or floors. Play with an ombré effect by using multiple shades of one color in lieu of multiple colors or patterns in Florida rooms.
  • Hanging Chairs: Why not add a little fun to your Florida rooms? Hanging chairs are all the rage this summer and could be the piece de resistance for your space. These chairs present an opportunity to add texture, color, and comfort to your sanctuary. Bring out your inner child while swinging or reading a good book.
