Our Story Of Transition

By Karla Nielsen

KarlaAbout six years ago, it became clear that my mother could no longer live alone on the Midwestern family farm where she had spent her entire married life–nearly 50 amazing years.  The reason: she was ill with dementia.   After several “close calls,” it became urgent that my brothers and I find her a safe place to live.

There weren’t many resources to turn to in Mother’s small town and she wasn’t able to make decisions, so we spent hours searching the computer for insight, information and people who might be able to help with her transition.  We visited various types of assisted living and nursing home communities and were grateful that her attorney knew a CPA who could assist us with her finances.  Through trial, error, and many lengthy discussions, we reached a family decision on what we believed would be a better community for her to live in.

And then we were faced with–what should we do next?  What do we do with a lifetime of possessions and “stuff”?  Where do we go for reliable advice?  It was an extremely difficult time that was fraught with emotion and an overwhelming amount of details, compounded by a 1000 mile difference in locations.

We know that our situation was not unique to us and that’s why we’re sharing our experience.   At some point, each of us will go through a transitional stage, whether as an adult son or daughter who becomes a caregiver, as retired or semi-retired adults who simply want to escape home maintenance worries or as active seniors who are excited about the ‘liberating’ possibilities of downsizing and having fun.  Our situation would have been so much easier if we had found a central resource that could guide us through our information gathering and decision-making process.  It is precisely that frustration that has driven us to create a new web resource that is dedicated to helping families experience a smooth, seamless transition to new housing opportunities.

So in the coming weeks, we will be unveiling this new destination, TampaSeniorMoves.com, where you can find informative content such as “right-sizing” your home, buying into an active 55+ community, finding the right movers, how to prepare yourself or your relatives’ transition through exciting but new changes, and many more helpful topics.  Plus, we’ll share information and resources from our network of experienced professionals of movers, contractors, attorneys, financial planners and more, all whom share our commitment to providing the highest level of service, professionalism and respect.

We look forward to connecting with you on this new website and will keep you posted on the launch date!
