Florida Life, Beaches, Labor Day

Florida’s weather is still sizzling hot, but we seem to consider Labor Day as the end of summer.  Celebrated on the first Monday in September, Labor Day ushers in a new school year, hectic fourth-quarter schedules, and a feeling of a new season.

In honor of this transitional holiday, many will hit the beaches or host end-of-summer cookouts with friends and family, while others may be completing home projects like painting or landscaping. If you’re open to other ideas, however, we suggest having a little fun this holiday weekend.

Here’s our short-list of suggestions for local events and activities Labor Day Weekend 2018:

  • Florida Home Show: Many of us consider our home to be a labor of love. You might as well spend Labor Day weekend browsing for new things to help you love your home. A large Labor Day Home Show will be held Aug. 31 to Sept. 3 at the Florida State Fairgrounds. The event will include hundreds of exhibits with experts displaying new products and home services. This could be a great opportunity to get new ideas for updating your home interior, kitchens, baths, flooring, exterior, fencing, patio, pool, and landscaping.
  • Sun, Fun, and Festivals: Everyone knows that there are always great festivals happening across the Greater Tampa Bay area, and Labor Day weekend will be no exception. To enjoy the final days of summer in style, check out the Summer of Rum Festival, Sept. 1-2, at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park in downtown Tampa.  In addition to amazing food and an assortment of rum concoctions, the event’s music line-up will feature 90s sensation Sugar Ray.  If you’d prefer a quieter long weekend, consider enjoying a rum drink while lounging on one of our beautiful local beaches. One of the best parts about living on the Gulf coast of Florida is that we have sugar-white sands and year-round glistening waters no matter if it’s summer or fall.
  • Major Sporting Events: There is a fantastic selection of sporting events to watch this time of year. The Greater Tampa Bay area is home to The Tampa Bay Buccaneers (NFL), Tampa Bay Rays (MLB), Tampa Bay Lightning (NHL), plus dynamic college teams and other leagues. You could kick off Labor Day weekend early with a Buccaneers Thursday night game against Jacksonville Jaguars on Aug. 30 at Raymond James Stadium. If you enjoy live soccer matches, you could also watch pre-registered participants from across the nation participating in the Tampa Bay Labor Day Tournament hosted by the Chargers Soccer Club, Sept. 1-3, at Premier Sports Campus in Lakewood Ranch. If you’d prefer to stay home and beat the heat, however, you could watch the Tampa Bay Rays on television playing daily away games throughout the entire Labor Day Weekend.
